Frequently Asked Questions
At what age should my child first see a dentist?
The Australian Dental Association recommends that children have their first dental visit by their first birthday or when their first tooth appears. Early visits help your child become familiar with the dental environment and allow us to monitor their oral development.
How often should children have dental check-ups?
Most children benefit from regular dental check-ups every six months, although your dentist may recommend a different schedule based on your child’s individual oral health needs.
What happens during my child's first visit?
The first visit is designed to be relaxed and positive. We’ll gently examine your child’s teeth and gums, discuss oral hygiene, answer your questions and help your child become comfortable with visiting the dentist.
What if my child is nervous?
Many children feel nervous before visiting the dentist. We take appointments at your child’s pace, explain everything in simple language and focus on creating a calm, reassuring experience.
Are baby teeth really that important?
Yes. Baby teeth help children eat, speak and smile confidently while also guiding the development of their adult teeth. Looking after baby teeth plays an important role in your child’s long-term oral health.
Does my child need fluoride treatment?
Fluoride treatment may be recommended depending on your child’s age, risk of tooth decay and oral health. We’ll discuss whether it’s appropriate during your appointment.
What are fissure sealants?
Fissure sealants are protective coatings that may be applied to the chewing surfaces of certain teeth to help reduce the risk of decay where clinically appropriate.
What if my child has a dental emergency?
If your child has a knocked-out tooth, broken tooth or significant dental pain, contact our team as soon as possible. We’ll advise you on the next steps and arrange an appointment where appropriate.
Are children's dental treatments covered by Medicare?
Many children are eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Schedule (CDBS), which covers up to $1,158 of dental care per child across two calendar years. We bulk bill the CDBS, so there is nothing to pay on the day for treatment covered by the scheme.
Eligibility applies to many children aged 0–17 and depends on the family payments you receive. It is determined by Services Australia — bring your Medicare card and we will check your child’s eligibility and remaining balance for you.
The scheme covers check-ups, X-rays, cleans, fissure sealing, fillings, root canals and extractions. Orthodontics and cosmetic treatment are not covered, and we will always quote those in writing before starting.
Can parents stay with their child?
Yes. Parents are welcome to remain with their child during appointments unless there is a clinical reason to do otherwise.
How can I help my child enjoy coming to the dentist?
Speaking positively about dental visits, reading children’s books about dentistry and scheduling regular check-ups rather than waiting until there’s pain can all help create positive experiences.
How do I book my child's appointment?
Simply call (03) 5441 4441 or use our online booking system to arrange a convenient appointment.
