What Is Included in a Dental Check-Up and Clean

A routine dental visit is more than a polish. Most of its value is in what gets noticed early, while it is still small and simple to deal with.

The examination

  • Teeth. Checked for decay, cracks, wear and failing restorations. Early decay has no symptoms, which is the main argument for not waiting until something hurts.
  • Gums. The depth of the space between gum and tooth is measured. Increasing depths indicate gum disease progressing, often before you would notice anything beyond occasional bleeding.
  • Soft tissues. Tongue, cheeks, palate and throat are examined. This includes a check for oral cancer, which is painless in its early stages and far more treatable when found early.
  • Bite and jaw joints. Signs of grinding, clenching, uneven wear or jaw joint problems.
  • Existing work. Fillings, crowns and implants reviewed for wear, leakage or decay at the margins.

X-rays

Not taken at every visit. They are taken at intervals based on your risk, because decay between teeth and bone loss around them cannot be seen by looking. Modern digital X-rays use a low radiation dose.

The clean

Scaling removes calculus, the hardened deposit that cannot be brushed off, from above and below the gum line. Polishing removes surface stain and smooths the tooth so plaque reattaches more slowly. Fluoride is sometimes applied afterwards, particularly for patients at higher risk of decay.

The conversation

The most useful part of the visit is often the feedback: which areas you are consistently missing, whether your technique is causing recession, and what to change. Advice targeted at what is actually happening in your mouth is worth more than general guidance.

Why the interval matters

Six months suits most people. Shorter intervals are recommended where there is a history of gum disease, high decay risk, dry mouth, smoking, diabetes or orthodontic appliances. The interval is a clinical judgement, not a fixed rule.

What you get out of it

Small problems are cheaper, quicker and more comfortable to treat than large ones. A cavity found early is a filling; the same tooth left for two years may need a crown or root canal treatment. Gum inflammation caught early reverses; bone lost to advanced gum disease does not come back.
