Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I have sleep apnoea?
Common signs of obstructive sleep apnoea include loud snoring, pauses in breathing during sleep, waking up feeling tired, morning headaches and excessive daytime sleepiness. However, a diagnosis should be made by an appropriate medical practitioner or sleep physician using a clinical assessment and, where required, a sleep study.
Can a dentist help with snoring?
Yes. For suitable patients, dentists trained in dental sleep medicine may provide custom oral appliances designed to help manage snoring and obstructive sleep apnoea. Your suitability will depend on your diagnosis and individual circumstances.
What is an oral appliance?
An oral appliance is a custom-made device worn while you sleep. It gently positions your lower jaw to help maintain an open airway during sleep for suitable patients.
Is an oral appliance suitable for everyone?
No. Oral appliance therapy isn’t suitable for every patient. During your consultation, we’ll assess your situation and explain whether it may be an appropriate treatment option or whether another approach may be more suitable.
Do I need a sleep study first?
If you haven’t already been diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnoea, a sleep study may be recommended by your GP or sleep physician before treatment is considered. We’ll discuss the most appropriate next steps during your consultation.
Can I use an oral appliance instead of CPAP?
For some patients, an oral appliance may be an appropriate alternative to CPAP. However, this depends on your diagnosis, the severity of your sleep apnoea and recommendations from your medical practitioner or sleep physician.
Is the appliance comfortable to wear?
Most patients adapt to wearing their oral appliance over time. Because each appliance is custom-made, it’s designed to fit comfortably and securely while you sleep.
How long does treatment take?
After your assessment and any required medical diagnosis, your appliance is custom-made and fitted specifically for you. Follow-up appointments are then scheduled to check the fit, comfort and effectiveness of the appliance.
Will I need follow-up appointments?
Yes. Regular review appointments are an important part of treatment to ensure your appliance remains comfortable, fits correctly and continues to perform as intended.
Does private health insurance cover sleep appliances?
Some private health funds may provide benefits towards oral appliances, depending on your level of cover and annual limits. We recommend checking directly with your health fund. Our team can also assist you with HICAPS claiming where available.
What happens during my first appointment?
Your consultation includes discussing your symptoms, reviewing any existing sleep study or referral, assessing your oral health and explaining whether an oral appliance may be suitable for your individual needs. You’ll have plenty of opportunity to ask questions before any treatment decisions are made.
How do I book a sleep assessment?
Simply call (03) 5441 4441 or book online to arrange your consultation. We’ll guide you through the process and explain the next steps based on your individual circumstances.
